Who You Are Matters
I was born and raised in San Francisco and have been here for pretty much my entire life.
I currently do not have any immediate future plans but after the pandemic is over I hope to travel to Europe and Korea. In terms of my career goals, I hope to work for a business, specifically one that would make use of my familiarity of foreign languages. If that does not work out, being a teacher or tutor seems like something I would be interested in.
To get there, I should look into international business and see what kinds of companies I would like to work for. I should also try to meet people who are currently in international business and network with them. If not, I might look into studying education to be a teacher.
The biggest way I am like my parents is that I speak their language. Even though I was born in San Francisco, I can converse perfectly in the dialect of Cantonese that my mom uses. Another way I am like them is that I prefer to have things neat and organized.
On the other hand, growing up in San Francisco has made me think differently from them. I would say that many of my values align with those of the average San Franciscan, while my parents' values do not.
I grew up under very heavy expectations from my parents and I have tried very hard to meet them. I would say that I have accepted much of those expectations but have also rejected some that do not make sense to me.
I do not have a role model. Instead, I am usually very introspective and always think about what I could have done better, many times to the point of over-analyzing and overthinking situations.
I do not interact very often with animals but I would say I feel connected to the rabbit because of the Chinese zodiac. On top of that, rabbits look quite cute and cuddly.
In elementary school, I had to help pull out weeds from a school garden patch. These weeds were five feet tall and touching them would make your hands itchy. We would have to wear gloves and dig them out by their roots. I felt like I had a purpose working with other classmates removing all the weeds and seeing all the progress we made each day.

Hi Darren, I think your argument for choosing rabbits is quite sound and logical. Beyond the rabbit being your Chinese zodiac sign, I also agree that they are cute and cuddly enough for anyone to feel connected to them. In terms of the languages you speak, I definitely believe that being able to speak more than one language will be a huge plus for you in whichever career path you may take.
ReplyDeleteHi Darren, I think having the opportunity to travel would be great. I truly believe traveling gives you the chance to explore so many new things and being able to learn a lot from different cultures. I really enjoyed your story of having to pull weeds. I certainly have done that before and as tedious as it may be, you can always see the positive side to it.
ReplyDeleteHey Darren, thanks for your post I really enjoyed it. I also grew plants as a kid and had a great time doing it. I remember cultivating the soil before planting our small tomato tree and then caring for it until it grew small tomatoes. I would say that I have also had heavy expectations from my parents. But I agree that it is important to see what is right for you and pursue what you are interested in.
ReplyDeleteHey Darren, I appreciated your idea of being very introspective as this is a key way to improve yourself and your life. Some people can fall into the trap of blaming external sources when things go wrong, but taking the introspective approach can often reveal the true nature of problems.
ReplyDeleteHi Darren. I admire how open you are to many possibilities, you aren't eager to start a specific life right after graduation, you want to travel and see the world. I enjoyed reading about how introspective you are. I also self analyze a lot, I think it is important to be able to look within yourself to become a better person rather than looking elsewhere, as everyone's path is different.
ReplyDeleteSan Francisco is a great place to live and is a place i have visited multiple times.
ReplyDeleteEverytime I hear San Fransisco I can't help but hear E40 banging my ears and seeing miss ladies yiking. Love that Bay Area vibe and hope to be back in the bay soon!
ReplyDeleteNice to learn about your parents, your plans, and especially your experience with weeds! Writing feedback: you write well, the format was great, easy to follow. Suggestion: we'll be talking about using examples in this class and there were four places in this post I wanted to hear more detail about: which San Francisco neighborhoods have you lived in? What are the values of the average San Franciscan? Which of your parents expectations have you rejected? What aspect the Chinese Zodiac rabbit do you relate to -- longevity? cautiousness? melancholy?
