SUBJECT: Recommendation to Invest in Ben & Jerry’s
As a Research and Development Analyst for Anima Mundi Development Partners(AMDP), it is my job to recommend a business that is committed to green policies and social responsibility to invest in. After much research and consideration, I recommend Ben & Jerry’s as the ideal company to invest in. I will detail how Ben & Jerry’s satisfies our rigorous standards and explain why we should invest. In this memo, you will find the following:
Our standards for investment
The background, financials, and values of Ben & Jerry’s
Critical appraisals of Ben & Jerry’s from industry sources
My recommendation for why we should invest in Ben & Jerry’s
AMDP Standards
Triple Bottom Line
The triple bottom line is a sustainability-based accounting method that focuses on people, profit and planet. (Fernandes) These three factors are:
People: how the company impacts shareholders, employees, vendors, customers, and the community where it does business
Planet: how the company works to reduce their ecological footprint by reducing consumption, waste, and emissions
Profits: how the company stimulates economic growth and creates wealth by compensating employees fairly, supporting local supplies with its business, generating innovation, and paying its fair share of taxes
Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate social responsibility is a type of business self-regulation with the aim of being socially accountable. (Schooley) The main categories are environmental efforts, philanthropy, ethical labor practices, volunteering.
Social Enterprise
A social enterprise is a business that has specific social objectives that serve its primary purpose. Social enterprises seek to maximize profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. Their profits are principally used to fund social programs. (Barone)
Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that come from the production, use, and end-of-life of a service or product. (Albeck-Ripka) These gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases, which trap heat in the atmosphere, causing global warming.

Hi Darren, I really like the layout of your investment proposal. You did a great job of using bullet points and sub headers. I think you did a great job at describing the AMDP standards. You have your investment proposal really organized and I can see the different topics you'll be talking about. I would say just to remember to include a section about expert opinions, but other than that it looks good!
ReplyDeleteHi Darren, it looks like you have a solid idea of what you want to write for the proposal. The definitions look solid, and splitting the rest into an overview, practices, growth, and a rec is smart. One concern I have is making a good case about why AMDP should invest in an established company. I can't remember if it was Ben & Jerry's specifically, but Prof. Hansen mentioned in class how food companies owned by big conglomerates are tough to pitch. I'm looking forward to seeing what angle you take and how this piece expands!
ReplyDeleteYour outline looks good so far. I would suggest on the people, planet, & profits list that you do something to make those three words standout a bit more. I used italics and a few spaces to do it. Good luck on the rest of the assignment!
ReplyDeleteHi Darren, great outline and layout. I like how you have incorporated bullet points. I personally like when there is a new paragraph introducing the bullet points. So making the"In this memo" line its own paragraph and having the bullet points right beneath that so it looks more connected (definitely not necessary, I just prefer that). I love Ben & Jerry's, so I am excited to read more from your proposal.
